Hydrant Flushing

Middlesex Water Company periodically conducts a fire hydrant flushing program which helps maintain the integrity of its distribution system.

Hydrant flushing, part of the Company’s routine testing and maintenance effort, is a process through which water is forced through mains to dislodge small particles of rust and sediment. This sediment does not affect water quality but can cause water to become discolored as it travels through mains at high velocity. Water is safe to drink and discoloration often disappears within a short time.

Hydrant flushing is generally conducted between the hours of 10 p.m. and 6 a.m. to minimize inconvenience to customers and motorists. In the event that discolored water is experienced, it is usually best to wait until water runs clear before using washing machines or dishwashers.
