The Middlesex System Service Area / History

Organized in 1897, our New Jersey water utility, (the Middlesex System), provides water services to approximately 59,500 retail customers primarily in central New Jersey.

Retail Customers: These retail customers are located in Woodbridge Township, the Boroughs of Metuchen and Carteret, portions of Edison Township, portions of the Borough of South Plainfield, the City of South Amboy in Middlesex County, and portions of the Township of Clark in Union County.

Wholesale Customers: The Company also provides water services under contract to municipalities in central New Jersey with a population of 303,000. These customers include the Township of Edison, the Boroughs of Highland Park and Sayreville, the Old Bridge Municipal Utilities Authority and the Marlboro Township Municipal Utilities Authority.
The Company also provides treatment and pumping service to the Township of East Brunswick under special contract.

Middlesex withdraws water from the Delaware &
Raritan Canal through its Intake and Pumping Station in New Brunswick. Water is transported through a 54-inch supply water main for treatment and distribution at the Company’s Carl J. Olsen Water Treatment Plant in Edison, New Jersey. Facilities at the CJO Plant consist of source of supply, pumping, water treatment, transmission, storage, laboratory and general facilities.
